Step 1 to Improve SEO: Optimize Your Website
As I sit here on my cozy couch surrounded by these massive windows, all I see is snow.
Where we are in Connecticut, we got at least 7” of snow last night. And then it turned to rain. And because of the temperatures—ice.
With each snow storm, the flakes accumulate. If the ice doesn’t melt, you begin to see the layers.
And that got me thinking of how SEO is layered.
SEO isn’t something that exclusively exists on your site—but it does start there. And end there.
Let's take a deeper look at that first layer.
—The Layers of SEO Optimization—
❄️ 1st layer: optimize website SEO (main web pages)
❄️ 2nd layer: optimize website content (blog posts)
❄️ 3rd layer: optimize off-site content & profiles (social media, podcasts, etc.)
As you can see, we’re starting with your home base & working our way out from there.
Why Start with Website SEO?
When you do it right, SEO drives people to your site—over and over and over and over again.
Your website is where all the magic happens. It’s where:
People get to know you better
People get a sense of how you can help
People can make purchases or sign up to work with you
SEO improvements must begin with your main website pages because SEO takes time.
Once your updated SEO strategy is plugged into your site, you can spend time elsewhere improving those SEO pieces. All the while, your website’s SEO is going to work for you!
📝 A note on “SEO Juice”
“SEO Juice” is something I first heard a few years ago. Since then, the popularity of the term has ballooned!
SEO juice is most needed on your site! Places like Bit.ly, Linktr.ee, & Substack already have LOADS of SEO juice.
When you create a blog on Substack, or use Linktr.ee as your Instagram "link in bio” you’re giving away that precious SEO juice you could (and SHOULD) be directing to your site—where it’s actually needed!
Why is it so critical you direct that SEO juice back to your website?
→ Because it’s your home base.
→ Because THAT is the space you control most.
→ Because your site is where it’s make or break with Google.
Your website is where you should be driving people because that’s where they’ll take the ultimate step to “convert” into something—an email subscriber, podcast listener, or… a client!
In order for that^^ to happen, it’s important search engines like you.
When Google & other search engines are evaluating your site—to see if they like & trust you or not—they’re looking for some specific things including:
1️⃣ Who do they help? What type of people are going to their site & spending time?
2️⃣ How do they help people? What kind of offers/experiences do they provide?
3️⃣ What are they known for? Why are people seeking them out?
The answers to these questions ensure that your website is working as hard as it possibly can for you & that search engines understand who needs to see your site.
Combined, they’ll allow you to breathe easier at night, not panic about finding your next client when you’re laid up in bed with a migraine, and to spend less and less time on Instagram—if that’s a goal you have.
How to Begin Optimizing Website SEO
Begin to improve your SEO by optimizing your main website pages.
I like to lean heavily into something called “On-Page SEO” to ensure each page is doing as much as it can to go out and market for you.
You can do this on your own with some SEO tools I recommend, or by getting me to do it for you!
