How to Pick the Best Blog Topic

Everyone & their mother is out here telling you to “consistently create content.” So… let’s say you have a blog & you want to be better about creating blog posts. How are you supposed to figure out the best topic to blog about?

(Don’t worry—that’s literally what I chose to write about today. 😉)

What’s the easiest thing to blog about?

The absolute, hands-down, easiest thing to blog about: Answer Frequently Asked Questions. (The ones you get all the time? Yeah, put ‘em to use!)

Places you can find those FAQs:

  • Instagram DMs

  • Email responses

  • Comments on other blogs

  • Comments on YouTube videos

  • Comments on Instagram posts

  • Survey responses

  • Everyday conversations

(like when my 90-year-old grandma asked what I do for work. uhh… I write words for websites to help businesses get found online, grandma.

I guess that’s better than my last response: I rub peoples’ bodies. 😂 Get your mind out the gutter! I was a massage therapist!)

Like you’ve heard me say a million-gajillion times—SEO is all about showing up as the answer to a Googled question.

So when you take the time to write an entire blog in response to someone’s question… the Google gods shall reward you mightily.

What blogs do people read most often?

The best performing blogs include:

  • How To

  • List

  • Video (link to-and-from your YouTube channel)

  • Case Study

  • Recap

  • Resources

  • Interview/Podcast (link to-and-from your podcast)

(I’ve got templates for these types of blogs inside this email course.)

The best blog posts are ones that Educate, Encourage, & Entertain readers.

People and the robots (search engines) value this. As evidenced by these two updates:

1. Google’s Helpful Content Update went into effect in the fall of 2022. The goal: prioritize & reward content that readers found valuable.

Google updated the Helpful Content update in September 2023.

As Search Engine Journal shares, “The Helpful Content System was designed by Google to promote people-first content and demote content written for search engines.”

Creating content that helps people builds trust with Google (& other search engines), which gets more eyes on your site, which shows search engines that humans actually see you as a trusted expert on X topic.

(See how that just comes full circle there?)

2. Another update to take note of: E-E-A-T in SEO.

It stands for Experience-Expertise-Authoritativeness-Trustworthiness. (Previously, “experience” was missing from this list that went into effect in late 2022 as well.)

By including your experience, you’re supporting your expertise, authoritativeness, & trustworthiness.

You’re showing readers, “Hey, I’ve tried this & got results like X and X for myself/clients.”

And that makes readers and robots trust you.

🔥 HOT SEO CONTENT TIPS 🔥

→ Showcase your expertise by including social proof (reviews, testimonials, case studies), stats, images, videos, & links.

→ Help search engines & humans alike understand who you are, what you do, & who you help by structuring your content. (And including internal links.)

What should I blog about to make money?

Maybe you’re wanting to put more effort into your blog so you can bring home some passive bacon, if you will.

You can make money from your blog in 2 main ways.

  1. Through affiliate links.

  2. Via your own services/products.

I do this on my blog (and plan to get more intentional with it). Here’s my plan—feel free to steal it!

  • Work backwards. What do I want to direct people to buy? Once you know where you want to send them, you can easily choose a blog topic.

  • Direct traffic. Where do you need to send them? Include the link—in several places. Have it as a button or hyperlinked text (you’ll see an example shortly). If you’re hyping this “thing” up, people need to know where to go to get it.

  • Strategically link your blog. Have a YouTube channel? A podcast? An Instagram profile? Great! Make sure to link from those other places to your new blog post. This will help anyone who wants to learn more actually do that. (Links also tell the Google gods that you’re creating an ecosystem of helpful stuff for your audience, which indicates you know your stuff. They like that!)

  • Include testimonials. If it’s your own product or service you want to point people toward, make sure to include a couple testimonials (or even a case study). Now more than ever people want to “try before they buy.” Testimonials do this—but case studies do it even better.

A notepad full of blog topic ideas and pen rest on a pink chair in an office with wood floors.

Do you have any blog examples for beginners?
