My favorite episode of The Simple + Smart SEO Show podcast: How to Run an SEO Audit [Live!]

If I’m being honest, my pits were sweating & my face was already dialing up the color from pink to red before the words even came out of my mouth.

I heard myself say, “Crystal, let’s record this! Maybe it will help someone else. And we can show a BTS look of what an SEO audit looks like.”

While the message in my head went more like, “What are you thinking?! There’s no way this is going to turn out wonderful! You haven’t focused on your own SEO at all in the last several months. OMG. OMG. OMG. Please don’t do this!”

And then the Zoom lady said, “Recording now in progress.”

And that, dear reader, is what brought us to this moment—you sitting there, reading these words about my favorite podcast episode Crystal & I recorded in 2022.

Let me drop some buttons in case you just want to hop over & binge The Simple + Smart SEO Show. ↓↓↓

(and may I just take a moment to drop the biggest of hints that WHO & WHAT we are bringing you in 2023 is nothing short of AMAZEBALLS! I’m so excited that Jac, my pup, is now looking concerned.)

OK, back to this SEO audit situation…

Some of the key things I wanted to share in that live audit were:

  • The awareness that SEO isn’t automatically built into your site—you have to put a little effort into it. However, if you put no thought into it but you do have words (copy) on your site, you will end up with an unintentional SEO strategy.

Because the words you share on your site tell Google what you’re up to. That is how search engines “understand” who you are, what you do, & who you help—which helps them show your answer as the desired result to a question. (Are some of those dots connecting? 💡)

Key takeaway: if you want your website to start working for you to bring in quality clients, you must be thoughtful with the messaging you’re pumping out to the internet.

  • Even experts make mistakes—our biggest mistake is often neglecting our own [insert the thing we’re an expert of]. (I’m still adjusting to this term “expert.”)

When we’re knowledgeable about something, we typically want to go out there & help others with that thing. Which leaves our own [whatever] on the back burner. Bottom of the To Do list. You get it.

But by leaning into my imperfections, being vulnerable, & sharing with you what’s gone well and what hasn’t—it’s allowed me to help others. This is our TOP show! (And as a slightly competitive Type 1 Taurus, it brings me happiness.)

In all seriousness, I’m also a recovering perfectionist, an introvert, & someone who’s #1 value is this: for you to never feel alone. So if me doing stuff like this ^^ helps you—I’m here for it.

  • Links. Links. Links. You know how in real estate it’s Location. Location. Location? Same. But make it SEO.

Backlinks are likely THE reason my site has a pretty good domain authority (my website is seen as trustworthy & helpful).

I’ve pitched myself to podcasts, answered queries in HARO regularly (like this one where I shared about my experience as a woman with migraines & got quoted in Glamour), & created a page on my site dedicated to my podcast.

The act of going out & seeking to connect with others & share knowledge leads to links. And that equals you being seen as an authority by the Google-meister and humans.

My SEO Audit was my absolute favorite episode of our 2022 season, but!

There were 2 other episodes that made their way into my top 3 for the year.

(In truth, I loved something about each & every episode of our podcast. And I’d love to know what you found helpful! We want to make sure to put more of that content out. Leave a comment below or…)

My favorite episodes were…

I just took a look. This ^^ was released in June of 2022.

And just now I’ve started to see more and more experts talk about SEO elements inside Instagram (and other social media platforms).

We covered 7 key areas to focus on to tighten up your SEO strategy on Instagram (and get found by more ideal clients).

(hint: it’s the word I chose as my word of 2023. INTENTION!)

This episode. Ahhh. I’ve heard other podcasters talk about moments like this & to have it actually happen was magical.

We all knew there were connections & overlap, but it revealed itself to us as we sat there in 3 separate states & discussed the topic.

I left that Zoom with so much excitement about pre-launches & SEO!

And not only that… I was able to bring another friend on the show to highlight her area of expertise!

(Brenna is also a client. We’ve collaborated on several case studies. You can click this to check out my friend, and another podcast guest, Emily Reagan! Keep an eye on her case study—updates about her most recent launch will be added soon!)

Also! This is time sensitive—if you’re reading this in January 2023, you’re in luck.

Brenna’s 4-day Behind the Launch event is happening January 23-27!

Crystal also had some favorite episodes from our 2022 podcast collection!

Crystal’s favorite takeaway here was that ROI isn’t always monetary. It’s also a return on effort (ROE).

Ashleigh made ads unscary for me! (<< that is totally a word & I’m making it happen.)

It’s a great listen whether you are or are not familiar with running ads.

Crystal really related to wanting to re-engage in the workplace after having her son, Asher.

The other really neat thing about what Sunny shared is this whole concept of the content before the funnel.

Yeah. Blew both our minds!

This is one we are both so proud of!

It is so critical to understand the lingo so you can actually implement what we’re sharing with you.

And we promise there is a part 2 in the works. (Send us any SEO terms you’ve heard & don’t understand.)

As a way to wrap this up—

THANK YOU! 🎉

I’m clacking away at the keyboard almost incapable of understanding how we’ve gone from this wild idea to record our SEO conversations >> all the way to having 9K+ podcast downloads in less than 8 months.
